I think the easiest way to do the route by public transport is to take the train from Inverness to Lairg, catch a daily post bus from Lairg to Lochinver, walk to Tongue then catch the postbus back to Lairg for the train south again. Alternatively there is a daily bus service between Inverness and Durness which stops at Lochinver. Walk to Tongue then catch the postbus to Lairg to return to Inverness by train. Hope this helps.

I am looking for a challenge for next year and the Southerland trail look,s right up my street. I have done the coast to coast, Hadrians way, West island way and the Cleveland way.I wild camped and enjoyed the freedom to walk the distance i felt like walking.
I don,t drive, live in York and could you let me know the easiest way to get to the start and back from the finish.
