Just some thoughts.

I can understand why you didn't change your plans in view of your note left at home. However, I think you'd agree that there are circumstances where it can be safer to change plans, eg when very strong winds make a narrow ridge risky but different terrain just makes it a glorious battle with the elements; or avalanche conditions make the planned route dangerous but another route/hill a safer option ; or not fighting against a dangerously strong wind but rather going with it, even if this  takes you away from your starting point.
