The usual debate about costs etc. Without knowing the true facts except what I read here, perhaps those like your friend who may have some disability should consider some beacon that can be engaged when the chips are down.
I was up in the hills this w/e and hopefully with the relevant knowledge but as one correspondent says you are one accident away from a rescue.
From what I can understand Ken did everything by the book. When he realised he was lost he stayed put, indeed he apparently stayed put for 6 nights. Fortunately he had plenty food with him and he camped next to a creek for water. He had an iPhone with him but the batteries went flat. After 6 night he lit a signal fire, which got a little out of ctontrol it seems. Anyway, the fire service saw the smoke and came to the rescue. They found Ken to be in good spirits.
It’s difficult to be objective when you hear ‘the facts’ third hand, but it would appear that Ken did pretty good.
