Ramblers Scotland -latest developments

There’s an excellent piece in today’s The Herald about Dennis Canavan - Man on a Mission to Protect the Right to Roam in Scotland. Dennis took over from me as Ramblers Scotland president and is now is now convenor of Ramblers Scotland. Check out the story - Dennis makes some good points and even suggests that if there is not a change of mind from the London board of Ramblers then Scotland might be forced to break away and go it alone.

If there is a will for breaking with London then the possibility of combining with MCofS to create a stronger voice in Scotland for the outdoors community should be considered as an option.

I think we need two separate organisations Neil. Though there is an overlap where both the MCofS and the Ramblers have a shared interest (and can work together), both organisations also have different roles.

e.g. The MCofS also represents climbers and mountaineers, whereas the Ramblers have a role speaking up for those taking the dog out for a walk near their home. These are not the same thing and I think merging could lead to a confused organisation with less than clear objectives. I’m sure there are many Ramblers members who’d never consider themselves a mountaineer (or go up a mountain) and likewise MCofS members who aren’t really interested in short country or even urban walks.
