A Wilderness Walk with John Muir
A 90-minute digital AV presentation that considers the philosophy and prophetic vision of John Muir. Muir emigrated from Scotland to the USA as a youngster and went on to become one of the world’s greatest ecologists. This presentation is a blend of “philosophic contemplation, naturalistic descriptions, environmental pleas, idealistic speculations and feisty argument” - all in the context of a 220-mile backpacking journey through the Sierra Nevada mountains of California – Muir’s “Range of Light”
Media Review
“I only got along to one lecture at this year’s Kendal Mountain Film Festival but what a lecture! Cameron McNeish gave a rather excellent presentation on the life of and philosophy of wilderness pioneer John Muir that was set against the background of two walks along the John Muir Trail. Cameron has always been an excellent raconteur and this presentation certainly didn’t disappoint. The mixture of history, views, anecdotes of time on the trail and the stunning photography of what Muir himself called “The Range of Light” was spot on, as was Cameron’s closing comment/challenge to the audience – “Do something for wilderness and make the mountains glad.”
Keith Rickaby, Climber Magazine 2003
Mountains - Earth’s Enduring Monuments
A considered look at some mountain areas of the world including the Himalaya, the Pacific North West, the Sierra Nevada of California, the Julian Alps of Slovenia and the hills of the UK. In this presentation I investigate the question of our relationship with the land as recreational users and suggests there is much we can learn from the wilderness that can be of immense benefit in our urban environment. This presentation is a personal appraisal of several mountain expeditions but at the same time it is both a celebration of mountains and a heartfelt plea for their future protection.

Wild Scotland – A Spirit of Place
In this presentation I self-indulgently concentrate on those areas that have formed the bedrock of my outdoors career, the hill and mountains of the Scottish highlands and islands. Now that Scotland can boast some of the finest access legislation in Scotland, I discuss the opportunities that are available for climbers, hill-walkers, Munro-baggers and backpackers, but my underlying theme is one of protection and conservation and why it is the responsibility of outdoor folk to care for these wild places. “If hill-walkers and climbers aren’t friends of the earth, then God help us all…”

Guatemala’s Magnificent Seven – Volcano-bagging in Central America
The Central American country of Guatemala boasts some 33 volcanoes, several of which are still active. Three years ago I led an expedition to this fascinating country and tackled 7 of those volcanoes. Most of the ascents involved long climbs through bamboo and cloud forest and on the live volcanoes the threat of sulphur fumes and showers of lava and rock were very real. But almost as fascinating as the volcanoes was the varied landscape and culture of Guatemala itself and the fascinating Spanish colonial town of Antigua, a World Heritage Site. This bohemian town is surrounded by massive volcanoes including Volcan Agua, a volcano that has severely disrupted the town several times in its history.

The Ascent of Mount Ararat
I led a trek to this amazing mountain and collected material to produce a podcast, available from iTunes or from this website. I added digital images to the podcast to create a 45-minute AV presentation that follows the expedition, discovering why this is one of the world’s iconic mountains. Sadly, we didn’t find Noah’s Ark… or perhaps we did!

Sandy Scrambles in the Wadi Rum of Jordan
Wadi Rum lies in the south of Jordan and borders with Saudi Arabia. It is a vast desert area with with great sandstone mountains rising from the desert floor like boulders in a vast, giant beach. In the company of local Bedouin guides we trekked through this incredible landscape, working our way through deep ravines and siqs in the heart of the mountains and scrambling our way to unusual rock features and mountain tops. Wadi Rum is unique and this 45 minute presentation outlines some of the history of the area, debunks some of the Lawrence of Arabia myths and celebrates the life of the nomadic Bedouin tribes who still inhabit the desert in their black goatskin tents.
